SMART SPEAKER ADVERTISING

In Brandon Schuster’s guest lecture from last week, the class learned all about digital marketing trends and all about the most upcoming technology platforms. I never realized the importance that these technology platforms have in advertising. Some of the ones that we discussed included “voice marketing,” otherwise known as marketing and advertising through our smart speakers such as Amazon’s Echo or Google Home. They come in many shapes and sizes and have several different functions and features. Smart speaker adoption is continuing to grow at a rapid pace, increasing at 70% per household in just one year.

Typically, these devices are used for simple tasks such as ordering groceries, asking about the weather, playing music, etc. However, now these smart speakers have become a useful tool in advertising for brands. In today’s ad-saturated world, many brands are looking towards audio in order to reach users in a more intimate and impactful way (LINK). In fact, many people have claimed that the smart speaker picks up on certain keywords that they say and they will later see an advertisement for it on their phone.

Smart speakers use something called speech recognition, which converts spoken words into digital words and is measured by its accuracy and speech (LINK). These smart speakers will continue to be vitally important in advertising because it is very likely that the main focus for technology over the next decade is going to be revolved around the mouth and audio. Voice technology has began to increase marketing activity and engage audiences more and more,  so it can be predicted that as the adoption for these devices increase, the reach for audio advertising through these devices will also grow.
